Michael C. Blandini (1930-2023) was a prototype development manager consultant from 1948 to 1996 and artist whose contributions to Converse helped define the brand during its most influential years. Born to Sicilian immigrants from the town of Pietraperzia, Blandini grew up in Malden, Massachusetts, before eventually settling in Saugus. His heritage instilled in him a strong sense of tradition and creativity, which he carried into his work.
Blandini's career at Converse spanned several decades, during which he worked closely with some of the greatest athletes in history. His custom sneaker designs for legends like Dr. J, Chris Evert, Magic Johnson, Jimmy Connors, Steven Tyler and Larry Bird became iconic, blending artistry and functionality to enhance the brand’s association with sports. His work helped elevate Converse’s reputation, especially during an era when the company was deeply involved with basketball and celebrity endorsements.
A true artist at heart, Blandini was known for his innovation, creativity, and eye for detail, which made his designs stand out. Colleagues often spoke of his kind and energetic personality, his passion for both work and family, and his ability to build lasting relationships.
In addition to his design career, Michael served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. His engaging storytelling, often filled with tales of his heritage and family, endeared him to colleagues and friends alike. His passing in 2023 marked the end of a life dedicated to art, family, and service. He is survived by his loving family, who fondly remember him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, leaving a legacy that lives on in his designs and the impact he had on Converse and beyond.
